Seoul Art Space was established in 2008 as part of the Urban Renewal Project of the Culturenomics Policies implemented by Seoul in 2008. The purpose and role of Seoul Art Space is to provide valid facilities which are reverted into cultural spaces to provide support for artists as creative spaces while offering citizens with high-quality opportunities for cultural enjoyment. As a cultural space with joins ‘Art-People-City’, Seoul Art Space not only integrates various cultural genres and promotes exchange between regional cultures, but also allows artistic participation from citizens. Currently, there are 8 Seoul Art Spaces operated by the SFAC Cultural Space Committee, including Seoul Art Space_Seogyo, Seoul Art Space_Geumcheon, Seoul Art Space_Sindang, and Seoul Art Space_Yeonhui opened in 2009 and Seoul Art Space_Mullae, Seoul Art Space_Seongbuk, Seoul Art Space_Gwanak, and Seoul Art Space_Hongeun opened or scheduled to open in 2010.

First, Seoul Art Space strives for mutual consilience between creative visual arts with various literature, humanities, and performing arts while communicating with regional citizens as a futuristic cultural space that enables ‘creation-communication-enjoyment’ all at once. Second, Seoul Art Space promotes the meeting of art and industry while striving to create a creative city and strengthen city competitiveness by eliciting strengthened regional cultural communities. Third, Seoul Art Space is a ‘Regional Hub type’ cultural complex with small-sized spaces located in many places within Seoul. This is a distinctive quality of Seoul Art Space which differs from developing a large-sized district within one specific region.

The representative cultural arts space in Hongdae opened on June 19th, 2009 by remodeling the previous Seogyo-dong Office Building. The art space has levels in B1, FL2, and Rooftop and includes exhibition halls, multipurpose session halls, rest areas, and work areas. The art space operates primarily on programs selected through public subscriptions.

A ‘Glocal’ Cultural Space Equipped with International Residences and Genre Infusion Type Project Spaces!
An Art Factory with Dreams of Urban Regeneration!

As a renovated printing factory, Seoul Art Space Geumcheon is an international residence hall and joint project studio. The space is equipped with 19 residence studios, 5 hostels, joint work rooms, joint practice rooms. Long-term and short-term residences selected through public subscriptions are residing here. Artists in various fields, including visual arts, installations/video, experimental art and art planning/criticism, can work from 6 months to two years in workspaces fitting their artistic needs.

An Art Studio within a Market filled with ‘Delight’ and ‘Affection’
A Marvelous Underground Art Arcade that is 390m Long

A creative space focused on applied arts created by remodeling empty shops within Sindang Underground Shopping Center in Hwanghak-dong. Around 40 artists specializing in applied arts (ceramics, textiles, metals, glass, ores, paper, clay, paint, cloisonne), printmaking, book art, photography, illustrative design, and media are currently producing various new artistic works here. In addition, various regional cultural marketing programs are being operated to promote exchange with other merchants.

A Garden Literary Village
A Grand Site for Korean Literature the First Ever Literary Creation Village in Seoul

As the first ever literary writing place in Seoul, the previous home of the City Compilation Committee has been modified into 4 sections. The space is equipped with 17 writing rooms for writers in 5 sectors including poetry, novel, drama, children’s literature and translations as well as 3 rooms for international residents. The space also has an outdoor stage, literature media lab and other communal spaces. The space has been playing a significant role in developing love for Korean literature through Yeonhui Thursday’s Reading Events, Yeonhui Literary School and various international exchange programs.

A Support Center for Budding Artists and ‘Mullae Creation Village’

Known as a self-sustaining art village, the space was opened on January 28th, 2010 as a support center for the Mullae Creation Village’ and various international and local artists. Equipped with various equipments and spaces, including multipurpose halls, recording studios, video editing rooms, joint collaboration rooms, and a hostel for artists, the space is a new model as a support center for artistic creations which provides ‘one-stop’ support for budding artists.

Seoul Art Space, Seongbuk was opened on July 28th, 2010 in order to attract art activities and residential participation by utilizing free space following relocation of Seongbuk Community Health Center. From B1 to FL 4, the center is comprised of a gallery, multipurpose hall, residential support center, and studios. As a cultural arts community which joins artists and citizens, the center is being operated around programs selected through in-house planning and periodic subscriptions.

Seoul Art Space Hongeun, utilizes the free space following relocation of the Seobu Road Traffic Center, into an eco-friendly, cultural art space. The center provides support for local and overseas artists (organizations) or related social businesses focused on the environment, develops eco-friendly¤ýecological creative programs, and generates regional culture and specializations through cultural exchange within the region.
